How We Machine and Control Slender, Small Precision Parts
Workholding support, precision tooling, cutting forces, thermal stability, and inspection processes are tailored to each part geometry.
01
Part Bending or Deflection
Long, narrow CNC machined parts are supported close to the cutting point, while optimized tool engagement and controlled cutting forces maintain component stability and precision.
02
Vibration and Surface Finish
Tool overhang, spindle speed, feed rate, and workpiece support are optimized to minimize chatter and achieve the specified surface finish.
03
Heat Distortion
Optimized cutting parameters, coolant delivery, and cycle timing help control heat buildup, minimizing thermal distortion in small features and thin-wall CNC machined parts.
04
Burr and Micro-feature Control
Optimized tool condition and cutting direction minimize burrs on cross holes, slots, threads, and miniature edges in precision CNC machined parts.

Is Swiss Machining Right for Your Part?
Swiss CNC machining is best suited to small-diameter, slender, or feature-rich parts that are difficult to produce consistently with conventional turning. Use the guide below to determine which process better fits your part.
● SWISS CNC MACHINING
Choose Swiss Machining When
✓The part is long or slender and requires support close to the cutting area.
✓Critical diameters, threads, holes, and grooves must remain accurately aligned.
✓Turning, milling, drilling, threading, or back-side features are required on one part.
✓Multiple setups could increase dimensional variation or extend lead time.
✓Repeat orders require consistent dimensions from batch to batch.
VS
● CONVENTIONAL CNC TURNING
Conventional CNC Turning May Be Better When
✓The part is short, rigid, or relatively large in diameter.
✓The geometry mainly consists of simple external and internal turned features.
✓Only a few parts are required and Swiss-type setup costs would outweigh the production benefits.
✓The component does not require extensive cross-machining or back-side features.
常问问题
Swiss CNC Machining FAQs
What parts are best suited for Swiss CNC machining?
Can Xproto produce both prototypes and repeat production orders?
Yes. Xproto supports prototype quantities, low-volume production, and repeat manufacturing orders. Prototype runs can be used to verify dimensions, materials, and functional requirements before production. For repeat orders, documented machining parameters and inspection plans help maintain consistent part quality from batch to batch.
Is Swiss CNC machining more expensive than conventional CNC turning?
Swiss CNC machining may involve higher setup costs, but it can reduce the total production cost of complex or higher-volume parts. Turning, milling, drilling, threading, and back-side machining can often be completed in one setup, reducing secondary operations, handling time, and dimensional variation. Conventional CNC turning may be more economical for simple, short, or low-quantity parts.
What tolerances can Swiss CNC machining achieve?
Xproto can achieve tolerances down to ±0.002 mm on selected features. The achievable tolerance depends on the material, feature size, part length, geometry, and inspection requirements. Every drawing should be reviewed before the final tolerance and manufacturing plan are confirmed.
What materials can be used for Swiss CNC machining?
Xproto machines a wide range of metals and engineering plastics, including aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, copper, bronze, titanium, POM, nylon, PEEK, PTFE, and other technical materials. Material selection should consider strength, corrosion resistance, dimensional stability, temperature, and the intended application.
What information should I provide for a Swiss machining quote?
Please provide a 3D CAD file, a dimensioned 2D drawing, the required material, quantity, surface finish, tolerance requirements, and any inspection or documentation needs. This information allows Xproto to review manufacturability and prepare an accurate quotation.
